Light Adjustable Lens Surgery

  • What Is Light Adjustable Lens Surgery?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only IOL that enables you and your doctor to design, trial and customize your vision after cataract surgery. Adjustability takes cataract surgery to the next level by giving you a lens customized specifically for your eyes.

  • How does a Light Adjustable Lens work?

The Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special photo-sensitive material that changes the power of your implanted lens in response to UV light, increasing the likelihood that you will achieve your desired vision after cataract surgery. If you select the Light Adjustable Lens, the first step is to have your cataract removed and the adjustable IOL implanted. The cataract removal and IOL implantation procedure are the same as if you selected a non-adjustable IOL.

After your eye heals, your eye doctor will perform further testing and select a custom designed UV light treatment for your adjustable lens based on your eyes and your unique lifestyle requirements. Between 2 and 5 total light treatments, each lasting approximately 90 seconds and separated by 3 days are required. The total number of light treatments is based on the achievement of the planned outcome.

Since UV light is used to activate the lens, wearing UV protective sunglasses during all waking hours is recommended, both indoors and outdoors. With the creation of a new ActivShield, each Light Adjustable Lens is equipped with a built-in protectant that shields the IOL from UV light until the doctor deactivates the shield during the scheduled treatments, making the chance of unscheduled prescription changes almost non-existent. Patients are provided the recommended UV protectant sunglasses to wear indoors, and a darkened pair for outdoors.
